The Weekend Woodworker

Issue 16, October 2021

Hi ,

Boo!

Sure, it’s only the beginning of October, but it’s never too soon to start enjoying Halloween! 🎃

Those of you who are fans of my podcast, The Woodworking Talk Show, will want to tune in on October 8th to listen to my conversation with Jaimie and Jay, The Wicked Makers, and get inspired with some next-level Halloween DIY projects. You must check out their YouTube channel.

Also in the works is another episode with Ethan James, The Honest Carpenter. This time, we’ll be talking about our shared passion for spooky movies and give you some recommendations.

Halloween projects offer a creative break from typical woodworking fare, pose interesting new challenges, and are a great opportunity to try new techniques.

The first time I ever tried intarsia was when I made this
fun scarecrow. If you’re not familiar with intarsia, it’s a technique where you cut various species of wood and assemble them into a sort of picture. It’s like painting with wood!

My ouija board from 2018 gave me a chance to try some pyrography. A woodburning kit is super affordable and doesn’t take long to learn the basics. It’s a fun way to customize any project.

I made my own coffin in 2017. It was fun to make it look like it was slapped together with scrap wood (in a way, it was) but it still needed to be functional. It needed a working lid that wouldn’t trap someone in it and become a real coffin! 😬

Likewise, I had to keep safety a priority when I made a
pillory. To a fault, really...the hand holes were big enough for even the largest hands to easily slip out.

Last year I made some creepy primitive dolls from The Blair Witch Project out of sticks. Woodworking can be many things!

So if you're the kind of person who enjoys Halloween, step out of your woodworking comfort zone. Whatever you make doesn’t have to be perfect, and it only has to function for a very limited time. Plus, it will mostly be seen in the dark! 👻

Happy Halloween!

Steve

Flashback Friday
Spooky Candy Dispener

This candy dispenser is a great project that offers a couple of interesting challenges. Plus, kids will love playing with it!
Community Highlight
Spreading the Halloween Spirit

Spooky projects are not just for October! Back in July, Bob was working on his jigsaw skills and cut out a plethora of bats. He then made them into these super cool garden signs.

Bob kept his Halloween spirit alive and built a Halloween countdown clock complete with an LED display. He shared it with The Weekend Woodworker community last month and inspired Garrett to make his own version of the sign.

It is wonderful to see community members sharing ideas, inspiring new projects, and, most importantly, sharing the Halloween spirit! ;)

This Months Member Projects
Check out these creative Halloween projects built by a few of our Weekend Workshop and Weekend Woodworker members!

Project 1
Boootiful Bowl

Have you ever seen a more beautiful candy bowl? I love this bat-shaped router bowl that Nicholas, a member of all three of my courses, made using walnut and cherry. Well done!
Project 2
Autumn Intarsia

After taking The Weekend Woodworker, Humphrey discovered intarsia. This beautiful piece made of western red cedar, aspen, cherry, mahogany, walnut, blue pine, and wenge shows that he is clearly not a newbie anymore!
Project 2
Coffin Candy Dish

A coffin candy dish is the perfect small project for getting into the Halloween spirit. Here are two lovely examples Joanna, a member of The Weekend Workshop, made for her family.
